Best Enclosed 3D Printers

An enclosure changes what you can print. Open-frame FDM machines are excellent for PLA and PETG, but they struggle with ABS, ASA, and nylon — materials that warp when the outer layers cool too quickly. An enclosed build chamber traps heat, keeps the temperature gradient small, and dramatically improves layer adhesion for engineering-grade filaments.

Passive vs. active enclosures

Most consumer enclosed printers ship with a passive enclosure — four walls and a door that trap ambient heat generated by the heated bed. This gets the chamber to roughly 45–55°C with a standard 100°C bed, which is sufficient for ABS and ASA. Active heated chambers (heater element + circulation fan) reach 60°C+ and are necessary for high-performance nylon, carbon-fiber composites, and PC.

The Bambu Lab P1S ships with an active chamber heater. The Bambu X1C is the high-end equivalent. Creality K1 and K2 Plus are passive. The Prusa Enclosure is a $200 add-on for the MK4/XL.

Filtration

Printing ABS indoors without filtration is genuinely a health concern — the fumes contain styrene. A good enclosed printer should either come with or accept an activated carbon + HEPA filter. The Bambu P1S has built-in filtration. For printers without built-in filtration, third-party enclosure solutions are available.

When you don't need an enclosure

If you only print PLA, PETG, and TPU, an enclosed printer is a nice-to-have, not a must. Open-frame machines at the same price point often print faster because the enclosure limits heat dissipation. Only buy enclosed if you actually need engineering materials or care about VOC control.
